“...in Sweden the number of reported hate crime cases is between 5,000 and 7,000 per year, in Ukraine the number has increased from 33 in 2014 to 163 in 2017. Sweden has 10 million inhabitants and Ukraine over 40 million."

Helena Lundgren is a EUAM Senior Advisor on Prosecution, based at the mission’s Lviv Field Office, and last week she led a training programme for Ukrainian police officers and prosecutors on ‘hate crime’. Here, Helena elaborates on the characteristics of hate crime, and how the authorities in her native country, Sweden, have dealt with the phenomenon.

EUAM staff members raise €2,000 for displaced older citizens

On Sunday 1 September, 12 EUAM staff members took part in the annual ‘Velo100’ bike race, cycling 100km around Kyiv in order to raise funds for the ‘Crisis Centre for Elderly People’, a shelter on the outskirts of Kyiv that provides accommodation for over 30 homeless older citizens, most of whom have been displaced by the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine. A small team of volunteers just about manages to keep the shelter operating, but conditions are poor. The €2,000 that we have now raised will be used to buy food, clothes, medicine, and to help with premises repairs.

Opening of the renewed Canine Unit of the Zhytomyr Educational Center for Police Training

EUAM is happy to be part of the opening of the renewed Canine Unit of the Zhytomyr Educational Center for Police Training. Earlier, EUAM supported the National Police canine officers to fulfill their duties by donating dog trailers. Check out the pictures from this week’s Open All-round Canine Championship of the National Police. More than 40 participants are competing over the next three days.
