Odesa Takes a Stand: Violence Is Not Inevitable – Change Begins with Us
December 03, 2024
“War is not an excuse for violence.” “European values are about zero tolerance for domestic and gender-based violence.” “The safety of a country begins with safety within the family.” “Violence in one family impacts the entire society.”
These were just a few of the messages displayed on orange cards at last week’s awareness-raising campaign in Odesa. This outdoor event was jointly organised by EUAM Odesa Field Office, Odesa University of Internal Affairs together with other partners as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence campaign.
At the heart of the event was a thematic photo zone. It featured powerful statements on gender-based violence, underlining why such violence must be met with zero tolerance in Ukraine. Special attention was drawn to a striking installation of red shoes, ballet flats, and sneakers. Arranged as symbols of protest, each pair carried a silent yet poignant message: violence has no place in our homes, families, or societies. Visitors were encouraged to interact with the display, taking photos and reflecting on the campaign’s messages.
“As EUAM Ukraine supports the strengthening of the criminal justice system, addressing gender-based violence remains a core focus in our work with Ukrainian partners. GBV affects everyone—men, women, children, and gender minorities—but women and girls disproportionately suffer its impact. Raising awareness about the profound scars GBV leaves on individuals and society is crucial to building a community where everyone feels safe and respected,” said Sanna Kaskeala, EUAM Advisor on Rule of Law.
The organisers also ensured the event had practical significance, equipping Odesa residents with resources to address gender-based violence. Visitors received booklets outlining where survivors could seek help and how witnesses could intervene. For those seeking a digital approach, a QR code on the event banner provided instant access to support service contacts and practical strategies for assistance. This thoughtful combination of outreach methods ensured the campaign resonated with diverse audiences.
The event served as a powerful reminder: violence is not inevitable, nor should it ever be tolerated. This is even more critical during the ongoing war. That’s why creating such a society starts with awareness and action—and that change begins with us.
