In Kyiv today, a new generation of potential police officers were given tips and tricks on road safety by the National Police of Ukraine with support from the EU Advisory Mission. A number of different activities targeted at children from the ages of 5-16 were organised in order to raise awareness about how to keep safe on the road and highlight the attractiveness of a career in the police.
A new project to strengthen legal protections for victims of crime was launched on 11 May by the EU Advisory Mission Ukraine (EUAM). The project was announced at a roundtable discussion in Lviv, bringing together experts on the subject from civil society, free legal aid centres, the prosecution service, judiciary, police, penitentiary system and academia. Similar roundtables will be organised in the coming months in Kharkiv, Dnipro, Odesa and Kyiv.
The European Union Advisory Mission (EUAM) Ukraine is a non-executive mission of the European Union that formally began operations from its headquarters in Kyiv on 1 December 2014, following the Maidan revolution of 2013/14 and an invitation issued by the Ukrainian government.
EUAM Ukraine aims to assist the Ukrainian authorities towards a sustainable reform of the civilian security sector through strategic advice and hands-on support for specific reform measures based on EU standards and international principles of good governance and human rights.
The goal is to achieve a civilian security sector that is efficient, accountable, and enjoys the trust of the public.
The civilian security sector reforms
The civilian security sector in Ukraine is comprised of law-enforcement agencies such as the Ministry of Internal Affairs, National Police, State Border Guard Service, National Anti-Corruption Bureau and Security Service of Ukraine; and rule of law agencies such as the Ministry of Justice, General Prosecutor’s Office, Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption and local courts system; with roles also being played by civil society and the parliament of Ukraine.
